Top 10 Tuesday: Titles or Covers That Made Me Want to Read/Buy the Book

Welcome to Top 10 Tuesday! This is a weekly challenge hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, and this week’s challenge is about titles or covers that made me want to read/buy the book!

I think we all know the famous adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” I think the figurative application of this saying is so important! When it comes to people, we should definitely never judge each other by superficial things. However, when it comes to books… While I would never judge a book negatively based on a cover I found unappealing, I definitely am sometimes positively swayed by beautiful covers! I love books mostly because I love actually reading them. But honestly, beyond being a reader of books, I am also a collector of books! And when it comes to collecting, sometimes what will look beautiful on a shelf is a consideration! I am also a fan of clever titles and puns, and will sometimes be convinced to try a book I wouldn’t have picked up otherwise due to an interesting title and/or cover. I’m definitely not saying this is the most important thing or the best way to shop for books, but a lot of effort goes into titles and the designs of book covers so it’s worth acknowledging and appreciating! Okay, I’ll stop rambling now and move on to my top titles or covers that made me want to read/buy the book!

1. “Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman

I just found this title so intriguing. Who is Eleanor Oliphant? Is she really fine? Why would someone think she wasn’t? I was also drawn to the simplicity of the cover (and, if I’m being honest, the sticker denoting it as one of Reese Witherspoon’s book club picks). And I was not disappointed! It’s one of my all-time favorite books.

2. “With the Fire on High” by Elizabeth Acevedo

I just think this cover is so gorgeous. I love the colors and all of the food! And again, I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a fantastic book that I read recently, and I’m hoping to put out a review soon! 3. “A Long Petal of the Sea” by Isabel Allende

I haven’t read this one yet, but I saw it in a bookstore and just couldn’t resist. I love the blue waves with the gold accents, and that title is beautiful as well.

4. “You Had Me at Hola” by Alexis Daria

I love the pun of this title and its reference to the iconic “You had me at hello” from Jerry Maguire. I also love Spanish and was excited to see “Hola” in the title. And the design of the cover is fun and gorgeous as well!

5. “Dim Sum of All Fears” by Vivien Chien

This one was such an impulse buy. I bought it for three reasons: I love dim sum, I enjoy a good pun, and the cover is purple (my favorite color). I’m not sure I’ve ever made a bigger impulse purchase when it comes to books. I haven’t read this one yet, but I’m hoping it’ll be a cute cozy mystery!

6. “The Child Finder” by Rene Denfeld

I love the image of the snowy woods on this cover. It’s beautiful, but also kind of ominous at the same time. I did read this one a few years ago, and thought it was good but also kind of disturbing. Definitely read the synopsis and reviews mentioning possible trigger warnings before reading it, as there were some pretty disturbing moments and descriptions that have stuck with me.

7. “The Henna Artist” by Alka Joshi

I just think this is such a gorgeous and inviting cover! And I am still drawn to that little sticker indicating that it’s a Reese’s Book Club pick. All of the books that I’ve read on her recommendation have been great so far! You can find my Travel Thursday post about this book HERE.

8. “Sharks in the Time of Saviors” by Kawai Strong Washburn

Isn’t this title so intriguing? I got this one on Audible recently, but haven’t listened to it yet. I’m actually really afraid of sharks, but I’m just so fascinated by this title and cover; it really piqued my curiosity.

9. “Sweet Tea and Sympathy” by Molly Harper

Honestly, I love sweet tea and got really excited when I saw it mentioned in this title. I’m literally drinking sweet tea as I write this! Due to this not being the best reason to buy/read a book, I had pretty low expectations going into it. And I was really unsure at first, but it actually ended up being really cute!

10. “The Murmur of Bees” by Sofía Segovia

This cover is so elegant and the title is so beautiful. And the story ended up being just as gorgeous as both the cover and the title. It’s a wonderful book that I’d highly recommend!
