Desarrollo de los personajes/Character Development: No había tanto desarrollo de los personajes, pero son personajes muy geniales y lindos.  Todos aprenden lecciones importantes, entonces el desarrollo que ocurre no es tan sutil.  ¡Pero está bien!  Las lecciones son importantes para lectores jóvenes.

There wasn’t a ton of character development, but the characters were very cute and enjoyable. They all learn important lessons, but the development that comes from this isn’t very subtle. And that’s okay! The lessons they learn are important for younger readers to absorb and understand.

Trama y ritmo/Plot & Pacing: Tiene un ritmo rápido con capítulos cortos.  La trama no es tan emocionante, pero hay algunos conflictos pequeños. Creo que el punto fuerte de esta historia es los temas.

It moves at a fast pace and has short chapters. The plot itself isn’t incredibly exciting, but there are several small conflicts throughout the story. I believe the strength of this story is in its themes.

Very cute! There is a lot of dialogue and many illustrations. There is a lot that will be engaging for younger readers.

Moderate. It’s a short book with short chapters, but the plot isn’t super exciting.

Inversión emocional/Emotional Investment: Regular.  Me encanta el personaje de Sarai y todos sus amigos, hermanos, y familia.  Pero la historia y las conexiones no son tan emocionales (¡y eso está bien!).

Moderate. I loved the character of Sarai, and I also loved all of her friends and family. But the story itself and the connections (among characters and with the reader) just weren’t incredibly emotional (and that’s okay!).

Pensamientos generales/Overall Thoughts: Es una historia muy preciosa y divertida, pero no es un buen modelo para enseñar sobre trama.  Sería un poco difícil usar una “montaña de la historia” (ejemplo aquí) para seguir la trama de la historia.  La historia tiene varias tramas y problemas (la feria, su bicicleta, el cachorro, etc.), y por eso la trama es un poco débil porque no es muy organizada ni clara.  Sin embargo, ¡todavía es un buen libro para lectores principiantes (grados uno o más alto)!

It’s a very cute and fun story, but it’s not a great model for teaching about plot. It would be a little difficult to map this story on a story mountain (example here) in order to track the plot. The story has several small storylines and conflicts (the fair, her bicycle, wanting a puppy, etc.), and because of this the plot is a little bit weak due to the fact that it isn’t very organized or clear. However, this would still be a great book for young readers (I’d say first grade and up)!

Recomendación/Recommendation: Es un buen modelo de cómo hacer una investigación y/o sacar apuntes (para estudiantes de los grados primarios).  También, ¡es una idea fantástica para un proyecto para la clase!  Hacer una feria alrededor del mundo sería una buena manera de conocer mejor a sus estudiantes.  También, sería una buena opción para grupos de lectura.  Quiero hacer esto con mi clase este año (los grupos de lectura y también la feria alrededor del mundo).  Mis estudiantes siempre disfrutan de aprender sobre otros lugares en el mundo, ¡entonces estoy emocionada por hacer este proyecto con ellos!

It’s a great model for how to do research and/or take notes (for primary grades). It’s also a great idea for a class project! Doing an around the world fair would be a great way to get to know your students better. This book would also be a great option for book clubs/novel studies. I want to do this with my class this year (the book club and the around the world fair). My students always enjoy learning about other places in the world, so I’m excited to try this project with them!

Saraí salva la música

Desarrollo de los personajes/Character Development: Hay muchos personajes, pero no hay tanto desarrollo ni cambio.

There are many characters, but there isn’t much growth or change.

Trama y ritmo/Plot & Pacing: La trama es muy cohesiva.  Todos los eventos que ocurren en la historia se tratan de la música.  Me gusta eso (y la trama es más fuerte que el otro libro en esta reseña), pero a veces es un poco repetitivo.

The plot is very cohesive. Everything that happens in the story revolves around music. I like how cohesive it is (and the plot is much stronger than the other book in this review), but at times it felt a little repetitive.

Estilo de escritura/Writing Style: Como el otro libro sobre la feria alrededor del mundo, ¡el estilo de escritura es muy lindo!  Y otra vez hay mucho diálogo y muchas ilustraciones.

Like the other book about the around the world fair, the writing style is very cute! And again there is a lot of dialogue and many illustrations.

Moderate. The plot is a little more interesting than the other book because the students have to save the music program at their school. And while reading the story, you can’t help but want them to be successful with this. However, it still isn’t an incredibly emotional experience for the reader.

Pensamientos generales/Overall Thoughts: Hay mucho vocabulario sobre la música y los instrumentos.  Para personas con conocimiento limitado de este tema (en cualquier idioma), podría ser difícil entender todo.  Algo que me gustó mucho sobre la historia era la participación de los padres en la trama.  Con frecuencia, los niños en libros o películas hacen muchas aventuras sin el conocimiento ni apoyo de los padres (y con frecuencia eso no tiene sentido).  Entonces me gustó que los padres en esta historia estaban apoyando a sus hijos con todo sin robar la independencia de los hijos ni su papel en la historia.  La única cosa que a mi no me gustó era el final, que para mi era decepcionante.

In this book, there is a lot of vocabulary about music and instruments. For people with limited knowledge on this topic (in whichever language), it might be difficult to understand everything that’s going on. Something I really liked about the story was the participation of the parents in the plot. Oftentimes, kids in books or movies go on all these adventures without the knowledge or support of there parents (and this is often unrealistic). So I liked that the parents in this story were supporting their children in all of their endeavors without stealing their independence or their roles in the story. The only thing I didn’t like about this story was the ending, which I found to be disappointing.

Recomendación/Recommendation: ¡Hay muchas opciones para cómo usar eso en una clase!  En la historia, los personajes aprenden un poco sobre ideas principales y temas, entonces sería un buen modelo para enseñar sobre estas cosas en su propia clase!  También, la narración es completamente en el tiempo presente, entonces podría usar el libro (o capítulos del libro) para enseñar sobre conjugaciones en el tiempo presente (en inglés o español). 

There are many options for how to use this book in the classroom! In the story, the characters learn a little bit about main ideas and theme, so it would be a good model for teaching about these things in your own class! Also, the narration is completely in the present tense, so you could use this book (or just select chapters from it) to teach about conjugating in the present tense (in English or Spanish).

También, sería un modelo bueno para la escritura de opiniones (porque los personajes en la historia tienen que usar estas estrategias para salvar el programa de música).  En adición, sería fantástico para enseñar sobre la ciudadanía digital.  En la historia, los niños usan las ventajas del Internet para salvar el programa de música, y con la ciudadanía digital es importante enseñar sobre las ventajas de usar el Internet con cuidado (en vez de solamente enseñar sobre los peligros del Internet). 

This would also be a great model for opinion writing since the characters in the story have to use these strategies in order to save the music program. Additionally, it would be fantastic for teaching about digital citizenship. In the story, the kids use the advantages of the internet in order to save the music program, and when teaching about digital citizenship it’s really important to teach about the advantages of using the internet safely (rather than just teaching about the dangers of using the Internet).
