Welcome to Top 10 Tuesday! This is a weekly challenge hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, and this week’s challenge is about comfort reads!
To me, comfort reads are the books I read either when I need an escape or when I need to get out of a reading slump. There are a couple of books that I love to re-read when I’m in need of comfort or when I need to get back into reading after a slump, but there are also some genres that I gravitate toward when I need something that I know will be engaging and/or comforting. Without further ado, here are the top (almost) ten books/types of books I go to for comfort reads!
1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
I’ve re-read these books so many times, but I never get tired of them! They’re the perfect comfort read for me since I know and love the story so well. The familiarity is comforting, and my love for the story makes it so that I’m not bored even though I know exactly what will happen.
2. Just Listen by Sarah Dessen
I’ve re-read this book several times as well. Honestly, I would find comfort in re-reading pretty much any Sarah Dessen book, but this one is my favorite. There’s just something so comforting about being able to return to a story that you love so much.
3. YA Dystopian Books
In general, if I ever need an escape, this is my go-to genre. They’re easy to read, fast-paced, and generally have a creative and exciting premise. They’re the perfect escape.
4. YA Contemporary Books
YA contemporary books are usually a little lighter (though not always), and can be a fun escape as well.
5. Romance Books
I don’t read a lot of romance, and I usually stick with the more tame stuff when I do branch out and read it. But oftentimes when I’m in need of a comfort read, something corny, cute, and fun is exactly what I’m looking for.
6. Thrillers
When I’m in a reading slump, something fast-paced and exciting like a thriller is exactly what I need to get back into the habit of reading! They’re not necessarily comforting like the other books and genres on this list, but they’re definitely a great escape!
7. Middle Grade Books
Middle grade books are the perfect comfort reads. There are so many great ones out there, and oftentimes when you’re in a reading slump all it takes is just successfully finishing one book to get you back on track. Middle grade books are great for that since they’re usually such quick and easy reads. Also, depending on the genre, they can be really cute, lighthearted, and comforting as well if you’re looking for that kind of escape from reality.
Have you read any of these books? What would your top ten be?
Let me know in the comments!
Middle grade books are excellent comfort reads!
I read a lot of them a year or two ago when I was going through a very rough time. They were such a lovely distraction.

Great list. The Hunger Games is such a great series to re-read. And I usually re-watch the movies when I’m done with the books.

I’ve not read The Hunger Games in years, in fact I don’t think I ever reread them, but I’d like to one day to see if they still hold up (I’m sure they do!).
